Career Journey: Victoria Murphy, Operations Manager

We asked Victoria a few questions about her career journey so far, how she ended up at Lifehouse, and what she loves about her job. Read the full interview below!

How long have you been working at Lifehouse?

Just over three years now.

Tell us a little bit about how you ended up here.

I was in a position in life where I was happy but didn’t feel I was challenging myself and didn’t know where my life was going! So, I felt a big change was needed. I moved from working in a small salon in Edinburgh to the Spa at the Lifehouse. It was very scary at the time to move away from my family and friends, but it’s the best decision I’ve ever made!

Describe your usual working day.

Well, we definitely don’t have two days the same here! Supporting the reception team if needed, talking to guests, catching up on emails from guests, checking on all departments, and dealing with anything else that comes my way.

What’s your favourite thing about working at Lifehouse?

The people that I work with. They are all amazing!

What do you like most about working in this industry?

I like being guest facing and sorting out any issues. It is very satisfying to deal with guest complaints and make sure we turn their stay around so they leave happy.

What makes Lifehouse different from other places you’ve worked?

It’s a much more relaxed environment. Everyone works very well together as well, so you always feel supported and part of the team.

What are some new skills you have picked up since you started working here?

I’ve become a lot more confident since starting here, and eager to learn to what I can. I’ve been very lucky to do courses such as Pool Responder Course, and Health & Safety course which has given me skills for life.

What advice would you give to people applying for a job like yours?

I think just to remember that even if you haven’t had this exact role before, that doesn’t mean that you don’t have the skills to do it. Any experience in managing a team and being able to problem solve are the main skills that are needed for this role.
