Workplace Mental Health Tips

We’re like a family at Lifehouse Spa & Hotel, and family always looks out for one another! Our staff are the beating heart everything we do here, and their safety and comfort is our top priority. We have a lot of procedures and policies in place to make sure they have everything they need to thrive in this working environment, including offering free Mental Health First Aid Training to everyone in Team Lifehouse.

Here are some tips we’ve learned along the way that can help you maintain good mental health in your place of work, whether that’s Lifehouse or anywhere else!

If work is having a negative affect on your mental health, try to figure out the specific causes:

  • High levels of stress

  • Dislike of certain tasks

  • Insecurity about skill or expertise

  • Poor treatment by customers or colleagues

Stress reduction techniques

If you’re in a very intense job, it’s not always possible to fully reduce your stress levels. But here are a few you can try:

  1. Use some breathing techniques to calm yourself

  2. Take a break when you feel overwhelmed

  3. Do small activities that you enjoy in between other tasks

  4. Find more tips in our Stress Management blog

Spend time in nature

We’re lucky to be located in the beautiful Essex countryside so our staff have the option of exploring the grounds on their lunchbreak or whenever they need a moment away from work. If you live in a city or busy area, try to find a nearby park or just stroll around the streets and let your mind wander freely.

Connect with others

Workplace happiness relies so much on the people you surround yourself with! It’s important to form connections at a new job so that spending time there feels like spending time with friends. You might also rely on these colleagues to support you in hard times and help lighten your mental load.

Look after your physical health

We often underestimate the importance of physical health in improving our mental health – but they’re both intrinsically linked! If you’re short on time, try to fit several short walks, jogs or stretching exercises around your usual schedule. For example, take the stairs instead of a lift, find a private room to do some yoga moves, or just walk part of the route to or from work.

Prioritise sleeping well

It’s not a cure-all but getting a good night’s rest can make a world of difference to your mental health. Set yourself a regular bedtime and try to be consistent with the time you wake up. Use relaxing music or mindfulness apps to slow down your mind at the end of the day and, easier said than done, stop looking at your phone, computer or TV screen several hours before bedtime!

Ask for help

If you don’t feel safe or comfortable asking your manager or colleague for help while suffering from poor mental health, then you’re working in the wrong place. Businesses must prioritise their staff’s health, whether that is mental or physical, and it is their job to be your support system and help you get through any difficulties.

Hopefully these tips might help you in some small way! Take a look at our vacancies page if you think Lifehouse sounds like a place you would enjoy working.
